Free DOT SAP Tools for Drivers

Failed or refused a DOT test? These free tools help you understand what may happen next, what the return-to-duty process involves, what it may cost and how long Clearinghouse information can remain available. Your answers stay in your browser and you do not need to sign up to see your results.

Which tool should I start with?

  • Just had a positive drug test, refusal or alcohol result? Start with Do I Need a SAP? It explains whether DOT return-to-duty rules apply and covers the 72-hour split specimen request period for qualifying drug test results.
  • Trying to understand the timeline? The SAP timeline calculator lays out the return-to-duty steps and gives illustrative planning dates. It does not predict or disclose actual follow-up test dates.
  • Planning for the cost? The SAP cost calculator lets you estimate evaluation, education or treatment, testing and time-off-work costs using your own figures.
  • Checking your Clearinghouse record? The Clearinghouse violation removal calculator explains prohibited status, CDL downgrade timing and when violation information may stop being available to employers.
  • Getting ready for an appointment? The SAP evaluation readiness check gives you a practical preparation list and questions to ask before you book.

How these tools work

Every tool runs in your browser. Your answers are not sent to us. The regulatory information is based primarily on 49 CFR Part 40 and, for FMCSA-regulated CDL and CLP drivers, 49 CFR Part 382.

You can download a PDF of your results. When you download it, we may ask whether you want help finding a SAP provider. Saying no does not affect the download. If you say yes, you can optionally provide your name, email, phone number and ZIP code and separately consent to us sharing those contact details with up to three independent SAP providers. Some providers may pay us for access to an opted-in lead. Before booking, confirm that the individual SAP meets the DOT qualification requirements in 49 CFR 40.281.

These tools provide general information, not legal or medical advice. A SAP determines the education or treatment recommendation and whether you have demonstrated successful compliance. An employer or other party authorized under the applicable DOT rules handles return-to-duty testing and employment decisions. For CDL and CLP licensing, your State Driver Licensing Agency controls the licensing and reinstatement process.

Common questions

What you may
want to know.

Are the tools really free?

Yes. There is no charge or sign-up required to use the tools, see the results or download the results PDF. SAP providers and other service providers set their own fees if you later choose to use them.

Do you keep my answers?

No. The tool calculations run in your browser. We receive contact information only if you choose the help option and submit the optional form. Sharing with providers requires the separate consent shown on that form.

Can a tool tell me I am cleared to drive?

No. After a DOT violation, returning to safety-sensitive work requires the applicable return-to-duty steps, including a SAP determination of successful compliance and the required negative return-to-duty drug test and/or alcohol result below 0.02. An employer still decides whether to place someone back in a safety-sensitive position. FMCSA drivers may also need their State Driver Licensing Agency to restore commercial driving privileges.
