The recommendations and timing depend on your circumstances. Your SAP determines the education or treatment you need and assesses your compliance.

Initial SAP evaluation
A DOT-qualified SAP assesses your situation and recommends education or treatment.
Complete the recommendations
You complete the education or treatment recommended by the SAP. What is required and how long it takes depend on the SAP’s recommendations and your circumstances.
Follow-up evaluation
The SAP evaluates whether you have successfully complied with the recommendations.
Return-to-duty testing
After the SAP determines successful compliance, an employer that intends to return you to safety-sensitive work arranges the required return-to-duty test. The required negative drug test and/or qualifying alcohol result must be received before those duties resume.
Follow-up testing
If you return, the employer implements the SAP’s follow-up testing plan. Completing the SAP process does not guarantee employment or a return-to-work date.
